Lithium-Ion Battery Safety

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, including phones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters, and power tools. As lithium-ion battery fires continue to increase nationwide, it’s more important than ever to understand how to use, charge, and store these devices safely to prevent fires. The tips below can help you reduce the risk and keep your home and family safe. 

BUY 

Always purchase electronics and batteries that are listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory and strictly follow all manufacturer instructions.  

 CHARGE 

• Use the charger and battery designed for your device. 

• Charge on a hard, nonflammable surface. 

• Unplug devices once they are fully charged rather than leaving them plugged in indefinitely. 

• Keep batteries at room temperature, never charging them in extreme temperatures. 

• Stop using the device immediately if the battery becomes hot, swells, leaks, or has a strange odor. 

 RECYCLE 

Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or curbside recycling—recycle them at a designated battery collection site to help keep your family and community safe.
