Open Burning Regulations

Since the Countryside Fire Protection District provides protective services to several different villages as well as unincorporated Lake County, regulations as to whether or not burning of yard waste is allowed as well as what can be burned and when. Below is the general overview for each area. A printable brochure with this same information is also available for download.

Jurisdiction Regualations
Village of Vernon Hills Open burning is NOT permitted. Outdoor fireplaces are permitted only when firewood is used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
Village of Long Grove The burning of leaves or grass clippings are not permitted. Burning of twigs, branches, and small trees is permitted provided that the piles are limited to 3’x3’x3’ and that these items are generated on the property. With a permit, prairie conservation areas are allowed to be burned in a controlled manner. Permits and guidelines can be obtained from the District.
Village of Hawthorn Woods Burning of leaves is permitted during the spring and fall on Wednesdays and Saturdays during day light hours. Spring Days are April 1 to May 15. Fall Days are October 15 to November 30.
Indian Creek &
Unincorporated Lake County
Burning of leaves is permitted during daylight hours.
Bonfires (All Areas) Requires notification and approval from the District.
